Lot Number: 677

Description: 1934 American League All-Star team auto. baseball. The second All-Star game was held at the Polo Grounds in New York. Although starting National League pitcher Carl Hubbell put on an extraordinary show for the hometown fans when he struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin in succession the powerful American League team rallied for a 9-7 victory. This ball is an extraordinary artifact of that game with an amazing (37) black fountain pen signatures on a Harridge Official American League ball including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson (coach), Jimmie Foxx, Earl Averill, Heinie Manush, Joe Cronin, Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane (2), Red Ruffing, Charlie Gehringer (2), Bill Dickey, Lefty Grove, and 24-year-old pitcher Mel Harder, the star of the game, who one-hit the National Leaguers over the last five innings to clinch the American League victory. Browns Manager Rogers Hornsby, Athletics Manager Connie Mack, Detroit Tiger Goose Goslin (2), and Cleveland Indian Sam Rice, all Hall of Famers who attended the Game, also signed. Sigs range from 7-9 out of 10. Impossibly rare, and it is hard to imagine a nicer or more complete team ball from this early All-Star Game when titans still roamed the diamond. Includes LOA from PSA/DNA J. Spence-S.Grad: EX-MT
