Description: Outstanding Notre Dame “Four Horseman” autographed photograph c.1920s (PSA/DNA 8 NM-MT) Stunning original sepia tone photograph picturing the vaunted “Four Horseman” of Notre Dame’s legendary football teams of the 1920s era. Under legendary Coach Knute Rockne the quartet served as the backfield for Notre Dames' football team for three seasons during which they lost only two games. Following an upset win over Army in October of 1924 noted journalist Grantland Rice penned one of the most highly regarded pieces of sports writing ever in which he poetically referred to the group - "Outlined against a blue, gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are: Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden." Fountain pen autographs of Don Miller, Harry Stuhldreher, Jim Crowley, and Elmar Layden present in superb high condition grade ranging from 8-10 out of 10. PSA/DNA has assigned an overall grade of (????) to the signatures. The 7”x9” photo itself is equally impressive dating to their playing era of the 1920s and deemed (Type I) by PSA/DNA. It would be challenging to imagine a better all-around example of a Four Horseman signed image on this highly sought after photographic medium. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA (Photo: Type I, Autographs: 8 NM-MT): NM/MT-MT
