Description: Very fine April 26, 1997 Mario Lemieux Pittsburgh Penguins professional model jersey (Last Game Before His Initial Retirement). Black mesh jersey with original Penguins team insignia on front and "C" captain's patch affixed to left breast area. "Lemieux" nameplate on back with trademark "66" underneath in . Short exhibits excellent use/wash wear including few areas of light soiling, interior pilling, and ????. Proper Starter/NHL manufacturer's label affixed inside collar along with additional "58-R" supplemental tag below."66 Lemeux '96-97' embroidered tag inside the tail area with fight straps intact. Signed by Lemieux on front and back in blue sharpie, respectively, adding "4-26-97" date. The jersey was presented directly to our consignor after the second period of the playoff game played between the Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers on April 26, 1997. The Flyers defeated the Penguins to take the series by a score of 4 games to 1 and advance in the playoffs. More notably at the time, the game was the final played by Mario Lemieux who announced his retirement shortly afterwards due in part to treatment of having been diagnosed with cancer. Lemieux would however return from retirement in the year 2000 and enjoyed great success once again with the Penguins. Originally obtained by a collector who received items directly from players and team employees in the period.
