Lot Number: 42

Description: Magnificent 1890 Princeton vs. Yale Ivy League Championship broadside. Mammoth size format 27"x40" matted and framed color lithographic display issued in promotion of the classic 1890 Thanksgiving Day championship game between Princeton and Yale. The game was played at Brooklyn's Eastern Park before a crown of 10,000 fans in which Yale handed Princeton their only defeat of the season by a score of 32-0. The broadside features a beautiful color lithographic rendering of a game scene which was later utilized for other football decorative display pieces of the Victorian era. Oversized color team names printed at top with game titling at the bottom margin. Marked, "Litho. of A.Ward Phelps of Park Place, NY" at bottom right corner. Given the unique size format and intricate nature of this particular display it was quite likely used for a main advertisement of the game on site at one of the two school campuses. Expected surface crazing throughout with some areas of creasing and few spots of age flaking none of which deter from its superlative display qualities. One of the most impressive period football display pieces in the hobby with relation to the two most dominant collegiate football programs of the 19th century: VG-EX
