Lot Number: 157

Description: Extremely rare 1902 Inaugural Rose Bowl program (Newly Discovered example). Important original "Souvenir Program" issued in the period is one of just a handful which are known and the only example we can document in this configuration. Soft cover program (6.25"x6") was available for 25 cents and has detailed information throughout the interior related to the parade and participating football teams. First and second half scores are dutifully noted on the scorecard page in fountain pen. The other programs from the event which have surfaced have a different (black and gold) cover and are of larger format with each interior page extending several inches to allow for print advertising. There are a handful of pages in the offered piece which have minute portions of this advertising visible however we do not believe it to have been trimmed down rather it is a different variety issued at the time. Interestingly those other programs (with black cover) do not have a price noted and the advertising may have been included to help defer the cost of production. It was recently discovered within a scrapbook and professionally removed with only some minor residue remaining. It otherwise shows little mentionable wear. Includes a page from that same scrapbook with a handwritten accounting of its' contents (mention is made of the Rose Bowl), a small newspaper clipping relaying that game results, and small section of 1902 "Tournament of Roses" logo paper. An important and historic football artifact coming to the market for the first time: Program EX with note to mounting residue
