Description: Exceptional Paul Hornung Green Bay Packers Super Bowl I professional model jersey with letter from Paul Hornung c.1966-67 (Resolution Photomatch to Super Bowl I, 1967 NFL Championship Game, and probable match to 1/2/1966 NFL Championship Game). One of the finest vintage Hall of Fame game jerseys we have encountered with direct provenance from Paul Hornung. Iconic green durene jersey with tackle twill “5” on front, back, and both shoulders. Classic green and white striping found on both sleeves. Size 4 flag tag found within the collar area and “Red Fox Manufacturing Co. label affixed to tail front with size 46 indicator and “Dry Clean” flag tag. The jersey exhibits tremendous evident use throughout to include appropriate repairs and numeral replacement as done by the Packers in the period. Clear outlines of the previous stitch patterns from number “5” visible underneath the team replaced “5” as currently affixed to the shirt. Numerous team repairs are found throughout including to the body of the shirt, shoulder area, and player numbers. Paul Hornung met Frank Metts while in their young teenage years in Louisville, Ky. The two shared close family friend and became lifelong friends. The jersey was presented to Frank’s son (and Hornung’s Godson), David Metts, in the early 1980s era along with the Super Bowl I attributed game used football within this auction. At a later date in October of 2000 Metts asked Paul Hornung to write a letter regarding the jersey to which Hornung obliged on his company letterhead, “David Metts-Your jersey is an original-I wore it at Green Bay-Paul Hornung Oct. 2000”. The jersey has been conclusively photo matched to the inaugural Super Bowl played on January 15, 1967 between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs. The jersey as also been conclusively matched to the January 1, 1967 NFL Championship Game game played between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys. Additional probable and possible, respectively, photo matches were made to dated images of 1/2/1966 (1965 NFL Championship game and final playoff game) and 7/29/1966 (likely pre season photo shoot) the latter of which used for the classic Hornung Sports Illustrated cover. It was determined that Paul Hornung was not able to play in the Super Bowl due to a severely pinched nerve. Regardless, Hornung was on the field in full uniform with his teammates for that historic game played at Los Angeles to determine the inaugural Super Bowl champion. Hall of Fame player game jerseys from the Golden Age of pro football in the 1950-60s era are exceedingly rare. This particular jersey dates to the prime of the Green Bay Packers’ dynasty with relation to a benchmark player in franchise history. Given the direct provenance to Paul Hornung, multiple photo matches, and superb evident game use the offered shirt is without question one of the most significant NFL game jerseys to have been offered at public auction. Includes dated 2000 hand written letter of provenance from Paul Hornung, notarized letter of provenance from David Metts (Paul Hornung’s Godson), LOA from Resolution Photomatch (For conclusive, probable, and possible matches), and LOA from Hunt Auctions (jersey): EX
