Description: 1913 Philadelphia Athletics Championship 14K gold pocket watch presented to Doc Lavan. Fine quality pocketwatch manufactured by the Howard Watch Co. of Boston features embossed laurel leaf insignia on the casing with "Philadelphia Athletics" team name around the edge. The center of the decoration (which reads "World's Champions 1913" on other examples) has been removed and we presume it was likely fashioned into a pendant of some sort. Back of case opens to reveal the engraved name of "John Lavan." The ongoing rivalry between the AL Philadelphia Athletics and the NL New York Giants was showcased once again in the 1913 World Series. The Giants and A's had previously battled for the title in 1905 and 1911 with each team capturing one championship. The 1913 Series was anticipated to be one of the most hotly contested since the game's inception in 1903. Ultimately the A's bested the Giants in five games to take the World Series "rubber match".
