Lot Number: 271

Description: Significant Concord, Massachusetts "Middlesex Nine" baseball bat c.1850-60s. Offered is the earliest non presentational baseball bats that we have offered or encountered in our 28 year company history. Hand turned 38" long bat is of the highest quality for the period having three separate incised thumbnail molding rings as well as hand painted titling and accoutrements including "Middlesex Nine Concord, MA" in red and black near the center of the bat. Barrel end displays vestiges of two rings in salmon and black coloring. Small knob termination is found at the end of the handle with pronounced lathe mark on the end. The bat presents in its original unrestored condition with expected surface wear and patination to the lettering and painted ring areas. The scarcity of this very early and high quality baseball equipment artifact cannot be overstated and is certainly among the best 19th century baseball items we have handled: VG
