Description: Bobby Mathews cabinet card c.1880s. Important early pitcher with a career that spanned (20) years during which he is believed to have been one of the inventors of the spitball and threw the first game legal pitch which broke away from the batter. He is credited with winning the first National Association game (played May 4, 1871) and was a member of National League and American Association Championship winning teams. Sepia toned image remains on original "Chandler & Scheetz" marked mount. Light general wear with handwritten identifier on back and unobtrusive pinhole at center of top edge: GD/VG
