Description: Superlative Mickey Mantle New York Yankees professional model hat with direct provenance c.1968 (Tom Tresh Provenance). Classic New York Yankees navy blue wool hat with embroidered "NY" on front. Interior of the hat retains original white headband with "New Era" manufacturer's tagging and 7 3/8 size flag tag. Evident use is visible throughout including perspiration toning to the white headband, cracking to interior bill support from wear, and general appropriate surface wear. One portion of an exterior seam on the second pleats has begun to separate near the base of the hat. "Mick 7" written in period black marker under the bill along with hand signed inscription from Mantle, "To Tom My Best Wishes, Your Friend Mickey Mantle". The inscription was written to Mantle's teammate and close friend Tom Tresh who had received the offered hat directly from Mantle. An accompanying hand written and signed letter from Tresh corroborates the fact that Mantle did in fact give him the offered hat in 1968. Mickey Mantle game worn uniform pieces are among the most desired of any player with hats rating as the most difficult to acquire given the typical lack of provenance. The offered example clearly rates among the finest Mantle hats to have ever been offered at auction with original condition and superb direct provenance.
