Lot Number: 743

Description: Significant 1972 Roberto Clemente Pittsburgh Pirates professional model road jersey and pants. Knit jersey with black and gold trim has "Pirates" team name across the front with number "21" below. The number also appears on back. "Rawlings" manufacturer's tag inside has adjacent "Set 2 #8P 1972" flag tag. Similar style Rawlings tag appears inside the pants (size 32) with adjacent "Set 2 #8P 1972 flag tag. Below is an embroidered strip tag reading, "Clemente 33 21 73", added by the Pirates in anticipation of his return to the lineup for the 1973 season. It has been relayed by the Clemente family that they were presented with this uniform by the team during memorial ceremonies at Three Rivers Stadium at the start of the 1973 season. This presentation is corroborated by period images as printed in the Pittsburgh newspapers (see detail photo). Usage and age related wear is evident throughout which mostly notably takes the form of staining and discoloration along with some small scattered holes. The pants have been re-stitched along the seam lines from where they were once separated for display. A highly important primary source game uniform from Clemente's historic final season. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and letter of provenance from the Clemente Family: VG-EX
