Description: Vintage "Clemente" baseball jersey with possible attribution to Roberto Clemente c.1970s. Unusual orange and white knit pullover jersey having applique brushed velvet "Clemente" name across the front with matching "21" on front and back. Light evident use is visible including some soiling to the left shoulder. Based on construction and style the jersey is consistent with manufacture of a 1970s period. While precise affiliation of the jersey is unknown it is very similar in sizing to documented Roberto Clemente Pittsburgh Pirates jerseys of the early 1970s inclusive of the examples within his personal collection. Additionally, there were no other individuals within the Clemente family during the 1970s era who would have been appropriate for this sizing (sons were very young). It is also absolutely certain that if in fact Clemente wore the offered jersey as a manager or commemorative player for a benefit team no other player on that "Clemente" team would have been graced with the number "21" on their jersey other than Roberto. To date, we have not been able to locate any definitive documentation or photographic evidence that the offered jersey was worn by Roberto Clemente. However, based on the aforementioned reasoning points it is certainly very plausible that he did wear the jersey for a benefit game or similar event many of which he was known to attend. Intriguing period Roberto Clemente jersey with primary source provenance. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions (period jersey) and letter of provenance from the Clemente family: EX
