Lot Number: 186

Description: Exceedingly rare 1909 John "Chief" Meyers autographed professional model baseball bat (PSA "GU 10"). Hand turned Spalding "Autograph" model bat with Meyers facsimile signature burned in has been signed, "To Ed. R. Maier, From Chief N.Y. Giants 1909, J.T. Meyers." The signature is done in period fountain pen rating 8-8/9 out of 10 and appears with a small hand drawn pictograph. The bat measures 35" long and weighs a monstrous 62.5oz, ranking as quite possibly the heaviest pro model player bat which has been documented to date. A small metal star has been tacked into the knob end with a single nail; a trait which has similarly been observed on Joe DiMaggio and Rogers Hornsby bats and may signify membership in the Masons. Appropriate usage wear can be seen throughout with ball and cleat marks. Meyers joined John McGraw's New York Giants in 1909 and would become Christy Mathewson's regular catcher for the next (7) years. He hit better than .300 in each of the Giants (3) National League Championship seasons, spanning 1911 to 1913, and ended his career with a .291 lifetime average. As a Native American playing in the early part of the 20th Century, Meyers talent and intelligence helped to break many long held stereotypes. He was admired by his fellow players, fans, and the press. One of the most significant early 20th Century player bats to have surfaced. Includes full LOA from JSA, LOA from PSA/DNA ("GU 10"), and LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
