Description: Historically significant Jerome Holtzman file related to "saves" statistic. Although the term had been losely used in the decade before, in 1960 Jerome Holtzman concieved of more statistically sound method for recording "saves." Adopted, at his urging, by noted Sporting News publisher J.G. Spink, the pair ran the numbers in his weekly newspaper for (9) years. In 1969, the "save" was officially adopted by Major League baseball. Presented is an intact file, as found within the Holtzman Archive, which appears largely to relate to his work on "saves." Most notable is a May 27, 1960 file copy typed letter from Holtzman to Spink in which he first introduces and promotes further use of the save. Found throughout are his typewritten notes (some recording stats, one titled "system for pitching saves"), some handwritten notes, correspondence between he and Spink/The Sporting News, several other letters, publication clippings/articles, etc. Includes letter of provenance from the Holtman family: EX
