Description: Important Cuban Giants "Colored Champions" broadside with Frank Grant c.1895. Incredible early advertising piece (approx. 6"x11") issued to promote a game played between the Cuban Giants and a local Chambersburg baseball team. Billed as the "Colored Champions Of The World", the Giants were anchored by Hall of Famer Frank Grant at shortstop. Grant, as noted on his Hall of Fame plaque, was "one of baseball's early stars who became an inspiration for future generations of African-American ballplayers." Recently discovered, it is the oldest surviving Negro League related piece of it's type we have handed and quite likely one of the earliest extant. Found within the papers of a poet and author named Columbus C.F. Bonner, the back is covered with his handwritten work. From the front, it displays only a touch of light wear with a faint horizontal fold: EX
