Lot Number: 248

Description: Rare 1894 Temple Cup print as hung in The Polo Grounds (Harry M. Stevens Collection). Exceptional large format rendering by noted illustrator Hy Sandham is one of the premier early baseball display pieces. Shown is the scene on-field as the Champion New York Giants face their N.L. rival Baltimore Orioles in the inaugural 1894 best-of-seven game Series. Appearing above and below are vignette portrait images which include a host of noted early Hall of Fame players and Executives incl. J.M. Ward, George Wright, Albert Spalding, Frank Selee, Hugh Duffy, Cy Young, Ed Delahanty, Cap Anson, Roger Connor, and Amos Rusie. One of only a handful we have offered, this example is from the collection of Legendary concessionaire Harry M. Stevens and, at one time, hung in his office at The Polo Grounds. Modified for display, the large central portion (approx. 20"x40") has had the top and bottom image strips separated and all have been tastefully reframed to reflect the original/intended appearance. There is some light wear to the illustration along with some mild spotting and minor moisture stains. The pieces above and below show somewhat more accentuated issues of the same nature. Signed, "Hy Sandham" in pencil at lower right of the bottom strip. Includes printout of the June 2011 auction listing from the Stevens Collection sale and the original lot identification tag: GD-VG
