Description: Important 1966 Gale Sayers NFL Rushing Championship Trophy Significant presentational piece features a cast silver plated figural player measuring 14+ tall positioned atop cylindrical black painted wooden base. Inscribed placard displayed on the front of the base reads in full, -Gale Sayers Chicago Bears, 1966 NFL Rushing Champion 1,231 Yards, National Football League Players Association.+ The NFLPA insignia is engraved to one side. Superb original condition overall with a few areas of expected light surface wear/tarnish to the figural and wooden base. Sayers had become the focus of opposing team defenses after his lauded Rookie season the year before but still managed (1,231) rushing yards in 1966, part of a then record setting (2,440) all-purpose yards. He would claim another title in 1969 cementing his legendary stature in Chicago Bears history. The offered trophy not only represents one of the most significant presentational items ever received by Gale Sayers but it should be noted that it certainly ranks among the finest football related award pieces to have been offered at public auction.
