Lot Number: 270

Description: Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel autographed baseball with related press photograph and Meusel signed image c.1921-22. Red and black stitched Spalding Official National League baseball has been signed across the sweetspot "Babe Ruth" in his classic diminutive early style. "Bob Meusel" appears on the panel above. Both are done in fountain pen rating 7-7/8 out of 10. Ball has mild toning throughout and a touch of wear incl. (3) small pinholes. Following the 1921 World Series, Ruth and Meusel signed on to participate in a barnstorming tour in violation of League rules. The incident put them at odds with Commissioner Kennesaw M. Landis and what resulted was a (5) week suspension served at the start of the 1922 season. Included is an original 6"x8" sepia toned press photograph (with numerous stamps/notations on back incl. "International" and "Apr 5 1922" date) showing Ruth shaking hands with Landis as Meusel looks on. The original paper caption notes that Landis responded to rumors he was to lift the ban by confirming it remained in place. An additional slightly smaller version of the image, which appears to be on a publication page, has been signed by Meusel in ink rating 7 out of 10. This photo is framed for display (10"x13" overall) with a pair of light fold lines visible. A choice early example as relates to what many believe to be a pivotal moment in Ruth's career. Includes auction LOA from JSA: Ball EX, Sigs. EX/MT-NM, photos EX
