Lot Number: 253

Description: Rare 1900-01 Pittsburgh Pirates team photograph. Early sepia toned image shows Pirates players in uniform while at Spring Training in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Notable amongst the crowd are Hall of Famers Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, and Rube Waddell. The presence of Waddell dates to the image to the 1900-01 time period, an enormously significant era in which ownership brought together a team which would be a dominant National League presence for years to come. From 1901-03 they collected (3) consecutive Championship titles and in 1903 took part in the first World Series. Although they were unable to topple Boston in 1903, the Pirates won a Franchise first World Series title in 1909 against Ty Cobb and his Detroit Tigers. Overall display value remains outstanding with sharp focus and crisp clarity. Edges of the mount have been trimmed to mirror the image size (7.5"x9.5" matted and framed) and show light wear. There is a puncture just to the right of Clarke (standing just behind Wagner) which has the appearance of roughly an "X" shaped tear which does not have overwhelming effect when viewing the piece. This could certainly be easily restored if so desired. From the Estate of Fred Clarke and includes letter of provenance from a Clarke descendant: Displays EX with note to technical grade description
