Lot Number: 503

Description: Rare Max Carey professional model baseball bat c.1912-1922 (PSA GU 8). Spalding pre model number standard finish ash bat measures 35" long and weighs 44oz. "Max Carey" player name has been block lettered into the barrel end. Heavy use is evident throughout with ball, stich, and cleat marks scattered about the barrel which has grain swelling due to repeated ball contact. A touch of well executed restoration has reversed some minor imperfections including a knob chip. A standout player with the Pittsburgh Pirates for (16) seasons, Carey batted over .300 (6) times and was feared while on base retiring as the National League's all-time stolen base leader (738 which has since been surpassed). He was with the Pirates for a World Championship in 1925, had a brief stint with the Brooklyn Robins, and enjoyed time as a manager on the professional level before election to the Hall of Fame in 1971. Carey bats are exceedingly rare and it is noted on the accompanying PSA paperwork that this is one of only two they have authenticated, this example having assigned grade of "GU 8." Includes LOAs from Hunt Auctions and PSA/DNA: EX
