Description: Rare and important 1924 Hilldale Athletic Club (Daisies) Eastern Colored League Championship medal. Incredible scarcity which was recently discovered within the estate of the consignor from which the ECL Negro League sweater within this auction originated. The Hilldale club was one of the more powerful teams of the short lived Eastern Colored League boasting several notable players including Biz Mackey and Judy Johnson. The team captured the Eastern Colored League pennant for each of the years 1923, 1924, and 1925. This particular medal originated from the same family source as the ECL sweater within this auction and as such adds great import to both the pin and, in turn, further corroborated sweater. The pin itself is of a typical brass medium suspended from an original red, white, and blue ribbon. “E.C.L. 1924 Champions” inscribed on the front surrounding baseball shaped décor in the center. Reverse of the pin is incised, “Hilldale A. C.”. Overall condition is very fine with light general age toning and surface wear while retaining its original patina. The 1924 season saw the Hilldale Club represent the ECL in the inaugural Negro League World Series in which they were defeated by the Kansas City Monarchs. This particular medal represents one of the most significant Negro League related awards to have ever been offered at public auction with special note to additional relevance to the 1924 Negro League World Series. Given the economic budgets of the Negro League franchises of the 1920-30s era it is important to note the true scarcity of such awards with the offered specimen serving as a possible lone surviving exemplar. Notable discovery of historical import and marked value as a significant Negro League championship award piece. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
