Lot Number: 420

Description: AMENDED DESCRIPTION: Very fine 1951 Pee Wee Reese Brooklyn Dodgers professional model home jersey. Cream colored flannel jersey has "Dodgers" team name lettered across the front in classic stylized script font. Player number "1" appears on back in matching blue felt. In the collar is a "Rawlings" manufacturer's tag with "Dry Clean Only" and size "42" tags below. The front tail has been chain stich embroidered, "Reese Harold 51" denoting player and year. Reese has signed the jersey directly above in faded blue marker rating 5/6 out of 10. Left sleeve has highly desirable original 1951 National League Anniversary patch affixed. Evident usage and wash wear throughout with a hint of mild consistent toning. Reese was a beloved member of the fabled Dodgers teams of the era which were a potent force in the National League, almost always finishing at or near the top of the standings. Despite sacrificing (3) years of his prime to service in the Armed Forces he put together a 16 year career during which he played in (10) All-Star games, was a part of (2) World Series Championship teams, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984; the same year that his jersey number "1" was retired. Reese is also fondly remembered as one of the most vocal and ardent supporters of Jackie Robinson during some of his hardest times breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Classic and highly desirable flannel from one of the most noted players on one of the most storied teams of the era and one of only (2) home examples which we have brought to auction in 20 years. **NOTE: Uniform numeral "1" on the reverse is a replacement of the original and the 1951 arm patch is an authentic period example but not original to the shirt. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions (jersey) and auction LOA from JSA (autograph): EX
