Description: Scarce Jim Thorpe single signed baseball c.1937. Off white Hatch Sporting Goods Co. "Professional Model" ball which has been signed on the side panel, "Jim Thorpe 1937". Black ink signature rates 7 out of 10 with a period coating of tape on the autograph area which could possibly be removed with professional restoration. The ball was originally obtained while Thorpe was speaking at high school assembly in South Eastern Idaho by a young man who was the son of a coach at the school. The ball has remained in the possession of the original owner until its current offering. Thorpe, of course, is universally recognized as one of the greatest all around athletes in the history of American Sport. While widely known as a football player at Carlisle and as a US Olympian Jim Thorpe also played professional baseball for several years with the New York Giants. First example we have offered in twenty years of auctions and one of only a scant handful to have surfaced publicly.
