Lot Number: 214

Description: April 18, 1923 Yankee Stadium Opening Day program. Desirable original program issued for the first game played at Yankee Stadium between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Overall appearance is perhaps the strongest that we have encountered with light evident wear confined to edges/corners. The front cover has a small tear (.5") at upper edge and several minute chips to orange colored border. Spine has had professionally executed restoration. Interior pages are generally clean with expected light age toning and scorecard has been neatly filled out in pencil. It appears that a vertical fold was pressed out, however there is no visible evidence of this on front cover and it is mentioned purely for the sake of accuracy. Original programs from this historic game have become exceedingly rare and desirable. When Yankee Stadium first opened on April 18, 1923, more than 25,000 fans had to be turned away at the gates, though most, sensing the historical significance of the occasion, lingered outside in the cold just to hear the sounds of music and the roar of the crowd. Before the game Babe Ruth famously said, "I'd give a year of my life if I can hit a home run in the first game in this new park". His wish, and that of the tens of thousands in attendance, came true. In the third inning, the Sultan of Swat christened "The House That Ruth Built" by hammering the first home run in Yankee Stadium history. With the regard to display value, this is the finest copy of this program which we have handled: Displays EX
