Lot Number: 227

Description: Superb Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig autographed baseball c.1927. Red and black stitched Spalding Official National League baseball has been signed on the sweetspot, "Babe Ruth" with "Lou Gehrig" appearing on the upper portion of the panel below. Each signature rates 9 out of 10 or better. Opposite side of ball has period notation of "Chicago, Ill. August 18, 1927 38 Home Runs Each" denoting the fact that both Ruth and Gehrig were tied for the lead in the homerun race; Ruth would not look back en route to 60 home runs with Gehrig finishing at 47. The ball was obtained at the game played that day at Comiskey Park between the Yankees and White Sox by a Chicago Board of Trade employee who took his daughter (an avid baseball fan) to numerous Chicago Cubs and White Sox games. Once married the woman then promised the ball to her son (at time of her passing) when he reached the age of 21. Until that point when he was 8 years old it resided in the infamous sock drawer where it was gently preserved for many years. Light evident toning throughout with the slightest hint of surface wear. One of the finest of its type that we have handled and surely one of the very best which exists with note to signature quality and ideal placement. Includes a notarized letter detailing the history and full LOA from JSA: Ball: EX-EX/MT, Signatures: NM
