Lot Number: 336

Description: Significant 1942 Negro League World Series program. Original program as issued for the game played on September 29, 1942 between the Kansas City Monarchs and Homestead Grays. The game was the fourth in the four game series and was won by Kansas City securing the championship. In a fascinating twist, Satchel Paige was scheduled to start the game but could not be found. He showed up after the 2nd inning and blamed the tardiness on a speeding ticket. He was immediately inserted into the game and did not thereafter surrender a hit or run. Program pictures Paige on the front cover and Josh Gibson on the reverse. Interior features printed lineups and remains unscored. General condition is very fine with a horizontal center fold line and two lighter horizontal fold lines at top and bottom. Very rare Negro League Championship program which is the first example we have encountered of its type: VG-EX
