Lot Number: 420

Description: Scarce Spalding baseball bat display rack sign c.1915-20. One of only a handful of original surviving exemplars, the offered sign consists of a color lithograph surface applied onto a painted metal circular marquis. Once attached to a Spalding baseball bat rack store display, the double sided sign presents very well retaining fine original color and surface. Several areas of the surface have been professionally inpainted, but they do not affect the integrity of the sign and its originality. The inpainting itself is mostly to the perimeter areas of the design and to some small (approx. 1/2" to 2") areas of flaking to the central areas. Sign remains attached by its original black painted cast iron "L" brackets to the top slat of an original Spalding wooden bat rack. The wooden slat retains a period paper label affixed to one side which reads, "Notice. Spalding Base Ball bats are not guaranteed A.G. Spalding & Bros." The paper label has some flaking to the edges and age toning, but remains clearly visible and fundamentally intact. Wooden slat itself has visible shadowing from its original connection to the frame of the rack with appropriate empty screw holes at the top. Notably scarce Spalding bat rack sign is one of only three such examples that we have encountered: VG-EX
