Lot Number: 463

Description: Rare Bill Dickey professional model catcher's mitt c.1930s. Fine quality Spalding catcher's mitt is attributed to use by Hall of Fame catcher Bill Dickey while playing for the New York Yankees c.1930s. Glove exhibits evident use including pocket wear and interior padding wear. Both front and back surfaces display some light to moderatesurface crazing as frequently seen on period gloves. Back of the glove retains its original Spalding label (red) with buckle back strap (split at center of strap but not missing any portions). The lot includes an original sepia tone 8"x10" image picturing Dickey seated with his wife (Violet Dickey) and daughter (Violet Dickey Stafford) looking at a baseball with the mother holding what appears to be the offered mitt. Additionally, the glove includes a signed letter of provenance, on Bill Dickey's personal stationary, from Dickey's daughter, attesting to the fact that the offered glove is in fact the glove pictured within the photograph. Pre-1950s Hall of Fame game worn professional model gloves with proper provenance and attribution are notably rare with the offered example among the finest of its type/era. Includes letter of provenance from Dickey's daughter and LOA from Hunt Auctions: VG-EX
