Lot Number: 169

Description: Significant Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson autographed photograph c.1911. Classic image of the two great deadball era pitchers shaking hands on the field is one of the more recognizable baseball images of the period. The photograph was likely taken during spring training on March 29, 1911 in Atlanta, GA, which marked the first meeting of Johnson and Mathewson. Exhibiting excellent composition and detail, the photo remains on its original mount which has losses primarily to the top left and bottom right corner areas. The bottom portion of the mount has been signed by both Johnson and Mathewson in period fountain pen. The Johnson signature remains almost fully intact rating 8 out of 10. Tragically, the majority of the last name portion of the Mathewson signature has been lost with the damage to the mount. Additionally, the photo itself has some typical surface creasing and a small surface abrasion (soiled) at the bottom left corner. The mount has a vertical tear/crease at the bottom left area which does intersect with the Johnson autograph. Image size is 7"x9" on a 10"x14" mount (original size before damage). With note to the condition grade, a case could be made that the offered piece is one of the more scarce and significant baseball signed images of its type. Incredible rarity with relation to two of the finest pitchers in baseball history. Includes LOA from JSA: Image: EX (with note to top left corner), Mount: PR, Signatures: EX (with note to missing portion)
