Description: Rare Christy Mathewson "Moving Picture Postcard." c.1907. Flipbook published by Winthrop Moving Picture Co. was intended for use as a postcard complete with mailing instructions on the back. Mathewson is shown in his distinctive New York Giants uniform and can be seen in follow through pitching motion when the pages are thumbed through. He is noted as being "No.19" from a series which was issued however to date only books featuring Matty, Mordecai Brown, and Iron Joe McGinnity have surfaced. It is safe to state that Mathewson is the key subject among that group and there are only a small handful of examples known (the last which we can cite as having sold at auction was offered by Lew Lipset realizing just over $5,000 in 2012). It is believed that these flipbooks represent the earliest moving pictures of Major League players. Never mailed with some light general handling wear including a crease on the back cover.
