Description: 1933 American League All-Star team panoramic photograph. Baseball's newest contribution to the glamour and romance of American sports, the All-Star Game, made its debut on July 6, 1933, at Chicago's Comiskey Park. It was initiated at the insistence of Arch Ward, a sports editor for the Chicago Tribune, to coincide with the celebration of Chicago's Century of Progress Exposition. The single game featured the most glittering assemblage of ball-playing talent ever brought together on the diamond at one time. Even then, it was Ruth's star that shone brightest. Arguably the game's biggest attraction, Ruth even drew the respect of his National League counterparts. St. Louis hurler and NL starter "Wild Bill" Hallahan summed up the general mood in saying, "We wanted to see Babe Ruth. Sure, he was old and had a big waistline, but that didn't make any difference. We were on the same field as Babe Ruth." His flair for the dramatic unwavering, Ruth blasted a home run that proved to be the difference in the AL's 4-2 triumph that day. Offered is an original 7"x17" panoramic photograph picturing (23) members of the victorious 1933 American League squad, manager Connie Mack, and five other team personnel. The photograph demonstrates excellent clarity with no significant condition flaws apart from some paper remnants adhered to several areas of the white borders, the likely result of a previously existing matte. The image is affixed to a rigid paperboard backing. The bottom section of the original mount (detached) accompanies the photo and features a complete record of the individuals depicted including Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mack, Joe Cronin, Lefty Grove, Bill Dickey, Al Simmons, Lefty Gomez, Wes Ferrell, Eddie Collins, Tony Lazzeri, Jimmy Foxx, Earl Averill, Rick Ferrell, Charlie Gehringer and company. This is undoubtedly one of the finest photographs extant representing the first American League All-Star team: EX-MT overall with note to backing. Matted and framed.
