Lot Number: 323

Description: 1972 Willie Mays New York Mets home jersey. Pinstriped knit jersey retains its original "Mets" team name on the front with #24 on the back. "42 72 24" size/year/number is chain stitched onto a strip tag inside the collar. Rawlings tag remains affixed onto the interior tail front area. The jersey itself exhibits excellent use and wash wear including slight puckering to the team name and numbers. Back of the shirt and collar show some typical light areas of soiling along with some usage soiling to the right sleeve. The #24 on the back has similar wash wear in addition to some noticeable surface scratching. This was due to Mays' tendency to scratch his back on the cinder block wall within the interior of the Shea Stadium dugout and has been confirmed as such by Mays. New York Mets logo remains affixed to the left sleeve. The jersey is signed across the front by Mays in black sharpie. Based on comparisons to a period color photograph picturing Willie Mays in a New York Mets home jersey on the front cover of the May 22, 1972 issue of Sports Illustrated, it appears that the image is an exact photo match of the offered shirt. Willie Mays completed his illustrious 22 year career with the 1973 Mets and is regarded by many historians to be the finest overall player in Major League history. Although Mays capped off his career with the New York Mets in 1972 and 1973, his stature as one the game's greatest players still carried enormous weight and drew fans in New York, the city where Mays began his career. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions (jersey), LOA from JSA (autograph), and a copy of the original May 22, 1972 Sports Illustrated picturing Mays wearing the offered jersey: EX
