Lot Number: 309

Description: 1976 Thurman Munson auto. professional model baseball bat. Louisville Slugger 125 model bat measures 35" long and weighs 30.4oz. The bat shows evident use incl. cleat marks, ball marks, and pine tar residue on the handle. Model #M169 is stamped on the barrel end above Munson's facsimile signature and alongside desirable 1976 Centennial logo stampings. Barrel of the bat has been autographed, "To Dave Best Wishes Thurman Munson" in black marker rating 10 out of 10. The barrel is also signed, "To Dave Best Wishes Jim Catfish Hunter" and "Ken Holtzmann" both in black marker. The bat includes a notarized letter of provenance from the original recipient who claims to have received the bat directly from Munson while the recipient was visiting with Catfish Hunter who had been an acquaintance. Both the knob and barrel ends have a "2" written in period black marker which has also been "colored" over in period black marker. As Sandy Alomar wore #2 for the Yankees, it is likely that he used the offered bat. Because bats were commonly used by other players, it is possible Thurman Munson may have also used the offered bat, although we cannot be certain. In either case, the desirability of the 1976 Centennial stamped bat coupled with the notable rarity of Munson autographed game bats places this example within the upper echelon of Munson related game bats. Includes LOA's from Hunt Auctions (bat) and JSA (autographs) along with the notarized letter of provenance from the original recipient: EX
