Lot Number: 304

Description: Thurman Munson's 1979 professional model baseball bat with its original Hillerich & Bradsby Co. shipping box and receipt from his final bat order. Thurman Munson Louisville Slugger 125 model bat measures 35" long and weighs 32oz. Model #S44 is stamped above Munson's facsimile signature on the barrel, both of which remain very bold. The bat exhibits no game use. Included with the bat is the original (12) count baseball bat box shipped from Louisville Slugger to the New York Yankees. The box is addressed to Yankee Stadium with "New York Yankees" stenciled in black above a black marker "Munson" on one end. The lot also includes the original shipping receipt from Hillerich & Bradsby indicating shipment of (12) Thurman Munson pro model bats at 35" long and 32oz. The words, "Sent Home" are written in pencil at the top left of the receipt. It is unclear who may have written the notation. Tragically, the receipt is marked with a "Ship Date" from the factory of 7/30/79, which was just two days before Thurman Munson's accident. The other (11) bats from the original box were either given away by the Munson family over the years or retained for the family collection. The offered example is the first and only Thurman Munson professional model bat from his final shipment to have entered the collecting marketplace. The characteristics of this bat are in stark and telling contrast to a typical Munson game used bat, which usually exhibits heavy wear and pine tar residue. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions (bat) and letter of provenance from Diana Munson: Bat: NM, Box: GD, Receipt: VG
