Description: 1977 Thurman Munson Home Run and Milestone RBI baseball. L. MacPhail AL ball was hit by Thurman Munson on October 1, 1977 for his 100th RBI of the season. The ball exhibits evident game use including some surface soiling and has been inscribed on a side panel by Munson, "Oct. 1, 1977 100 RBI's-3rd Year in row against Detroit". The game was played at Yankee Stadium with the Tigers winning by a score of 10-7. Interestingly, although the Yankees lost the game on October 1st, they still clinched the American League East pennant on account of a loss by the Boston Red Sox. Although Munson was typically revered for his fine defensive play, he took equal pride in his offensive abilities. From his rookie campaign (.302 average with 57 RBI's) through the remainder of his career, Munson excelled on the batting mound in numerous categories. The offered baseball is one of only a handful preserved by Munson in relation to a career accomplishment. According to Diana Munson, Thurman was especially proud of hitting 100 RBI's for three consecutive seasons while serving as an everyday catcher. In fact, Munson was the first catcher since Hall of Famer Bill Dickey to compile three straight seasons with 100 RBI's and a batting average greater than .300. Includes LOA from JSA (Munson writing) and letter of provenance from Diana Munson: EX-MT
