Description: 1975 Thurman Munson Home Run and Milestone RBI baseball. L. MacPhail AL ball was hit for a home run by Thurman Munson on September 22, 1975 off of pitcher Rick Wise of the Boston Red Sox. The home run represented Munson's 99th and 100th RBIs of the season. Ball exhibits evident game use including some surface soiling and has been inscribed on a side panel by Munson, "Sept. 22nd 1975 2 run homer off Rick Wise for 99th & 100th RBI's Shea Stadium". At the time, home games were played at Shea Stadium while Yankee Stadium was being renovated. Despite Munson's home run contribution, Wise and the Red Sox took the game by a score of 6-4. Although Munson was typically revered for his fine defensive play, he took equal pride in his offensive abilities. From his rookie campaign (.302 average with 57 RBI's) through the remainder of his career, Munson excelled on the batting mound in numerous categories. The offered baseball is one of only a handful preserved by Munson in relation to a career accomplishment. According to Diana Munson, Thurman was especially proud of hitting 100 RBI's for three consecutive seasons while serving as an everyday catcher. In fact, Munson was the first catcher since Hall of Famer Bill Dickey to compile three straight seasons with 100 RBI's and a batting average greater than .300. Includes LOA from JSA (Munson writing) and letter of provenance from Diana Munson: EX-MT
