Lot Number: 792

Description: Lot of (3) original telegrams and a signed typewritten letter relating to the sale of Hank Aaron to the Boston Braves c.1952. Highly significant set of period documents to include: Three original Western Union telegrams sent by John Mullen, who was the secretary of the Braves Minor League club in Evansville. Two of the telegrams are essentially the same, dated May 28, 1952 and May 29, 1952, each accepting the agreement between the Braves and the Indianapolis Clowns to purchase the contract of Henry Aaron for a total of $10,000. Additionally, the telegrams indicate that Aaron is to be paid a salary of $350.00 per month. Lot also includes a typewritten letter on Boston Braves stationary confirming the enclosed check (not included) for $2,500 as an initial payment for Hank Aaron's contract. The letter contains priceless content including, in part, "...By all accounts it appears that we have a fine prospect in Aaron..." The letter is signed at the bottom by John Mullen. These very documents are related to one of the most significant player acquisitions in Major League history as the Braves narrowly missed losing Aaron to the New York Giants who had also been doggedly pursuing the rights to Aaron (see related lot in this auction). The lot also includes a third telegram sent by Mullen regarding two other players. Incredible letter and pair of period telegrams from the archives of the architect behind the initial Major League contract for Hank Aaron. Includes letter of provenance from the Pollock family: EX
