Description: Important 1886 St. Louis Browns World Championship medal. Offered is the pinnacle of baseball related jewelry with regard to craftsmanship and rarity. Issued to the Browns star pitcher Bob Caruthers for his participation in the 1886 Championship series in which he captured two of the Browns four victories. The extremely ornate medal features a clenched fist holding a ball at the top of a diamond studded crown. "St. Louis Browns" inlay surrounds a 22 carat gold coin, from which the main body of the pin is suspended. Diamond shaped background is adorned by numerous accoutrements including gold laurel decor, crossed bats, and two figurals flanking a three dimensional globe. The term ôChampions of the Worldö is inlaid on a gold bar and continues on the globe just below. The back is inscribed, "Presented to Robt. Caruthers by the Citizens of St. Louis as a token of esteem-1886", with the manufacturer "Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Co." stamped below. Until the recent discovery of the offered pin, the only such example known to exist was that of teammate A.J. Bushong which was offered at auction as part of the legendary Copeland Collection in 1991. Pin remains in fine overall condition with original patina and intact components free of any breaks or damage. The gold coin at the top has been restored to exacting detail based on the Bushong example and is of a solid 22K gold similar to the original.
