Lot Number: 881

Description: Jackie Robinson and Clem Labine related lot. Includes Sept. 9, 1958 telegram sent by Robinson to Labine requesting his presence at a interracial youth march on Washington in Oct. of 1958. The telegram reads as follows, "I have been invited by Mrs. Ralph Bunche, Mr. Philip Randolph, The Reverend Dan Potter, Dr. Martin Luther King, and many other national leaders to sponsor a interracial youth march for integrated schools in Washington on October eleventh. The purpose is to dramatically express the profound sentiment of decent minded youth that integration is morally sound and has worked. Since you have been part of an integrated organization if you will join the youth and myself in marching it would be an important contribution in awakening the good conscience of Americans toward the goal of peaceful change and a democratic way of life for all-Jackie Robinson:. On the reverse of the telegram is a handwritten response by Labine who could not attend due to travel plans already arranged: EX. Lot also includes a fine original 8 1/2" x 11" image from 1956 of Clem Labine hugging Jackie Robinson after pitching a 10 inning shutout to capture Game #6 of the 1956 World Series.
