Lot Number: 97

Description: Assorted World War I related paperwork from the Mathewson Collection. Includes envelope addressed to "Captain Christopher Mathewson, Chemical Warfare Service" that is stamped "Confidential" and dated "Sep 10 1918"; (2) page typewritten list of names and addresses which include Mathewson and fellow Baseball Hall of Famers Branch Rickey and Eppa Rixey. They are broken down by rank and may represent members of an Athletic Advisory council during the war; lengthy casualty report document (14 pages in total) with "Capt. Mathewson" written on top (first page) in unknown hand. It is dated December 15, 1918 and was issued by "American Expeditionary Forces...Offices of the Division Surgeon." It details the sick and injured handled from July to November of 1918; a typed letter (faded slightly and not easy to read) which appears to have been intended to be a humorous letter written home from France by a generic solider ("Crown Prince Willie") and was likely distributed to those serving to add some levity during trying times. Varying degrees/types of wear throughout. Includes Mathewson Collection certificate of provenance: GD-EX
