Lot Number: 36

Description: Outstanding Christy Mathewson photograph with young fan Jimmy Gralich c.1910s (PSA/DNA "Type I"). Charming sepia toned 6.5"x8.5" photograph showing Christy Mathewson at the Polo Grounds shaking hands with a young fan. The child is named Jimmy Gralich and he was a neighbor of Conlon's who adored Mathewson. Conlon himself purchased young Jimmy the uniform he is wearing, snapped a timeless photograph of him imitating Matty's famed "hands above head" pose, and brought him to the dugout to meet his idol. In the book "Baseball's Golden Age" this very meeting is referenced in the caption of the Gralich image which appears on page (17). Conlon's own handwritten notation which appears on the back reads "Matty telling little Jimmy how to become a great pitcher, Notice Jimmy's eyes!." Photograph displays light toning and there is mild wear which is largely confined to the corners. An endearing photograph which fully conveys the level of esteem in which young fans held Mathewson at the height of his career. Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA with "Type I" designation. Includes Mathewson Collection certificate of provenance: VG-EX
