See a Picture of this Item 237 Historic Oct. 8, 1913 World Series Game #2 Final Out baseball. Official T.J. Lynch National League baseball was presented to New York Giants pitcher Ferd Schupp by Giants first baseman Fred Snodgrass. Game #2 of the 1913 World Series showcased a battle between pitching aces Christy Mathewson and Eddie Plank. "Matty" as he was called by teammates, was coming off of his next-to-last 20+ victory season in the majors having posted a 25-11 record. The Bucknell star was matched up against his former collegiate rival, Eddie Plank, from Gettysburg University. Both teams battled to a scoreless tie through nine complete innings behind the two star pitchers. Mathewson himself would break the deadlock, allowing an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning en route to a 3-0 victory for the Giants. The offered baseball descended within the family of former New York Giants pitcher Ferd Schupp. The ball exhibits evident game use and has been inscribed in period ink on all panels as follows, "Shibe Park Worlds Series Oct. 8, 1913 Athletics vs. Giants Batteries Plank & Schang/ Mathewson & Meyer-McLean/ 10 innings Score Ath-0 Giants-3". The reference to Meyer was an understandable error made in the period as he appeared in Game #1, with Art Wilson and McLean sharing the duties in Game #2. The other two panels of the ball list the hits, strikeouts, and walks as given up by each pitcher in addition to the following, "Given to Ferd Schupp by Snodgrass Given to Bernard Bonn by Ferd Schupp. This ball was caught by Snodgrass Last Out". Significant and historic final out baseball with impeccable primary source provenance from family of the original recipient. See a Picture of this Item 241 1923 Babe Ruth single signed baseball. Lightly toned Spalding "Official League" ball signed across the sweet spot by Babe Ruth in black fountain pen. Signature displays boldly rating 8/9 out of 10. A faint period ink inscription on a side panel indicates the ball was signed by Ruth on Sept. 4, 1923. On that date, New York Yankees pitcher Sam Jones threw a no hitter against the Athletics in Philadelphia, beating Bob Hasty 2û0. Babe Ruth made the only strikeout of the game to slip a point behind Detroit's Harry Heilmann in the batting race. Not until Ken Holtzman's no-hitter in 1969 would another pitcher record a no-hitter with no strikeouts. In a twilight charity game later that day, Babe Ruth played 1B for Philadelphia's Ascension Catholic Club and scored the only run in a 2û1 loss to the Lit Brothers. The inscription on the side panel of the offered ball affirms that it was in fact signed during the exhibition game and may have actually been used. Scarce early 1920s high grade Ruth single signed baseball dating to the prime era of Ruth's career. Includes LOA from JSA and letter of provenance: Ball: EX, Signature: NM ($7,500.00-$10,000.00) $13,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 242 Exceedingly scarce "Rube Waddell" signed baseball c.1905. Incredible and intriguing relic was discovered within the Ferguson collection along with the other autographed baseballs offered in this section. The ball itself exhibits heavy game use including surface soiling, varying degrees of abrasion, and fading to the multi-color stitching. Based on comparisons to several other documented baseballs we have handled from that era, the ball does appear to be of a professional quality, although impossible to confirm given its current condition. "Rube Waddell '05'" is penned across the ball in period ink. The ink remains very bold rating 8 out of 10 as the signing obviously occurred after the ball had been used. This ball, along with the others in the Ferguson collection, was first examined by Hunt Auctions for appraisal purposes around 1993. We have only been able to identify two "documented" exemplars of Rube Waddell autographed items with printed lettering rather than cursive writing/signatures. There are both similarities and differences between the offered baseball and the two known exemplars, and we have not been able to locate the last name "Waddell" in any type of printed form. In October 1994, Christie's East offered, as Lot 299, a Rube Waddell single signed baseball which had been personalized to a Nellie Pearl, who was the girlfriend of Detroit Tigers player/manager Hughie Jennings. While the signature is signed in a cursive format, the salutation, "Compliments of" was printed by Waddell. Although the printed portion of the salutation does have some dis-similarities, the letter "l" in "compliments" has a very pronounced "backstroke" much like the "ll" in "Waddell" on the Ferguson baseball. Due to the admitted lack of exemplars for comparison, we are not able to have the ball authenticated by JSA. We did submit the baseball to a nationally respected forensic laboratory, however, whose services we have utilized in the past for similar instances. The ball was examined by McCrone Associates Inc. of Illinois with the intent of specifically dating the ink used to write "Rube Waddell" on the baseball. The testing concluded that the ink is in fact consistent with ink of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Iron gall ink, which has a heavy chromium content, was extremely prevalent during the early 1900s and was positively identified to have been used on the Ferguson baseball. A detailed forensic analysis report from McCrone Associates will accompany the lot. To the best of our knowledge, there are only two documented Rube Waddell single signed baseballs of merit, inclusive of the Christie's exemplar. The Waddell "signed" ball within this collection represents an opportunity to acquire a definitively period item which, based on provenance and dating analysis, may in fact have been "signed" by Waddell in a printed format. The ball will include a letter of provenance along with the McCrone report. While the lack of printed Waddell exemplars makes formal signature authentication impossible, we do fully guarantee that both the baseball and ink are of the period: Ball: GD, Signature: EX/MT-NM ($10,000.00-$15,000.00) $10,000.00
