1948 Joe DiMaggio Sport Magazine Champion of the Year award. Elgin 18K gold pocketwatch presented to Joe DiMaggio by the Editors of Sport Magazine. The watch was given to DiMaggio for his spectacular 1947 season in which he captured the 1947 AL MVP award and led the Yankees to the World Championship. The exterior of the watch is ornately decorated with a Greek athletic scene and raised lettering, "In Honor". "To Joe DiMaggio" is engraved at the bottom of the watch case. The interior plate is inscribed, "Sport's Champion of the Year from The Editors of Sport Magazine January 1, 1948". The watch itself remains very clean in working order. Sport Magazine was one of the more prominent sports publications in the country during the 1940s. Joe DiMaggio presentational floor radio c.1936. Great vintage RCA Victor standing floor radio presented to Joe DiMaggio after his inaugural season with the New York Yankees. The radio measures 15" deep, 26" wide, and 42" tall remaining in fine overall condition with some general wear to the finish including a few scratches and some veneer chipping. The radio does accept electrical current and the lighting behind the tuning dial is operational although it is likely that new electrical wiring may be required for usage. An applied brass placard is affixed to the top area inscribed, "Oct. 26, 1936 Presented to Joe DiMaggio By His Friends of North Beach". According to period newspaper accounts and personal interviews, the radio became a family fixture in their San Francisco home when Joe DiMaggio was playing in New York for the Yankees. The Passport features four different Marilyn signatures including, "Norma Jeane DiMaggio" and "Marilyn Monroe" on the "Description of Bearer" page. The following page has an inset original black and white 3" square photograph of Marilyn signed, "Norma Jeane DiMaggio" and "Marilyn Monroe" in black fountain pen. Custom made necklace with New York Yankees World Series ring pendant attributed to Marilyn Monroe c.1950s. Beautiful custom made 14K gold necklace with three interlocking perpetual hoops has a New York Yankees World Series ring pendant suspended within the center. According to family history, the necklace was made by Joe DiMaggio for Marilyn Monroe. The World Series pendant appears to have either been removed from one of Joe's actual World Series rings, or custom ordered by Joe from Balfour, who made the original rings for the Yankees. Based on style, the ring pendant dates to either 1949, 1950, or 1951. Pendant contains a single diamond of approximately .25 carats surrounded by a baseball diamond shaped field. "New York Yankees World Champions" in raised lettering encircles the diamond. The necklace was documented to have also been worn in later years by Joe DiMaggio's sister Marie and her daughter Betty Kron. It was recounted directly by Marie DiMaggio that Joe had specifically made the necklace for Marilyn. This is clearly supported by the fact that it could not have been made for Joe's first wife Dorothy Arnold as their divorce pre-dates the ring style. Joe married Marilyn in 1954 and would not marry again, although it is accepted that he and Marilyn had been planning to re-marry in the 1960s before her death in 1962. The fact that the pendant is from a World Series ring is notably significant as Joe's World Series rings were stolen from a hotel room in the 1960s. It is quite possible that the offered pendant was made from one of Joe's rings before they were stolen. Important March 1, 1954 Marilyn Monroe autographed handwritten letter as sent to Joe DiMaggio. The offered two page letter was penned by Marilyn Monroe at 11:38pm on Sunday night, February 28, 1954. The newly married couple had recently returned from a honeymoon and tour of the Orient to entertain U.S. Troops. Although deeply in love, it was clear that the marriage would be a challenge given Joe DiMaggio's enormous fame and the rising public persona of Marilyn Monroe. The offered letter gives a unique glimpse into the feelings Marilyn had for Joe and clearly affirms her love for him. The content reads as follows,
"My Dad [one of her nicknames for Joe], I don't know how to tell you just how much I miss you. I love you till my heart could burst. All I love, all I want, all I need is you-forever. I want to just be where you are and be just what you want me to be. I know its lousy of me to be so late so often and I promise to try a million time harder. I promise. I want someday for you to be proud of me as a person and as your wife and as the mother of the rest of your children. (two at least! I've decided) I miss it so much when you don't love me and hold me and cuddle me to sleep every night. I want to be near you and I feel so sad tonight. Darling please don't leave me anymore. Love Marilyn".
At the top of the first page, Marilyn wrote "Di" before her green "M" monogram and "Sunday night 11:38 PM" at the top right corner. Includes the original envelope hand addressed by Marilyn to Joe DiMaggio as sent to his New York address. The content of the offered letter is simply unprecedented and definitively confirms that the relationship between the two was in fact filled with sincere caring and love, even in the face of the substantial difficulties their celebrity caused to the marriage. Until the current offering, the letter had been kept neatly placed in its original envelope within Joe's belongings and was previously unknown. Fascinating group of telephone messages received by Joe DiMaggio from Marilyn Monroe at the Hotel Lexington in New York. The messages, beginning on 12/27/1960 and continuing until 2/1/1962, are marked as coming from either "Mrs. Miller" or later on, "Mrs. Norman". Interestingly, the messages indicate that Marilyn frequently telephoned Joe two to three times per day and often late at night (sometimes as late as 2:00-3:00am). She often phoned on notable dates, including New Years Eve 1960 at 10:00pm; Feb. 6, 1961 (Marilyn would enter the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic the next day); and Feb. 1, 1962 ( she attended a dinner in honor of Robert Kennedy that evening). "Miss. Norman called twice" is written on this particular message, which was hand dated at 2:45am and then machine stamped at 8:45 am. Miniature booklet with interior blank pages shares the same cover as the April 4, 1955 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine. The interior contains numerous pages of notes handwritten by Joe DiMaggio with regard to Marilyn Monroe. The content is stirring, illustrating immense love for Marilyn and concern for her well-being. A unique kindness and caring with emphasis on Marilyn's need is evident in several passages, which clarifies any historical misconceptions regarding his feelings and treatment of her. Penned after the divorce, the first two pages seem to be written as guidelines for a reconciliation attempt and read as follows:
1. Don't ever be critical.
2. Forget ego & pride.
3. Talk from the heart.
4. Be warm, affectionate, & Love.
5. Don't be a sch??
6. Be Patient-no matter what.
7. No Jealousy. Remember this is not your wife. She is a fine girl and remember how unhappy you made her. Happiness is what you strive for-for HER. Don't talk about her business or her friends. Be friendly towards her friends. Don't forget how lonesome and unhappy you are-especially without her."
The sincerity with which DiMaggio expresses his feelings for Marilyn is nothing short of honorable especially when considering his stature as one of the more respected and prominent citizens in the country during the time. The remainder of the writings are basically Joe's interpretations of telephone calls made to Marilyn. While too lengthy to reproduce in the catalogue, a full transcript is available upon request. Several key passages and excerpts read as follows:
"I asked her how she looked. She said not the way you like to see me! I said 'how come'. She said you like me with make up-and I said that 's not so-that you look good anytime made up or not you have natural beauty."
"She said you wanted to see me. I said yes. She said before 10 o'clock or after eleven. I told her I'd prefer eleven as she wouldn't have to rush as much."

The letter was discovered within Joe DiMaggio's wallet, which contained other objects dating to the 1954 era. Due to years of storage and likely handling from time to time by the recipient, the letter has separated into four equal sections. Although it could be restored to one piece, there is a certain appeal to leaving the note as it had been treasured by Joe for those many years.
The wallet and its contents remain exactly as they were found, including several membership cards issued to Joe (unsigned), a few pieces of foreign currency, a charming photo of Joe Jr. putting air into a tire, and a rare 1942 Joe DiMaggio “Captain of Port” identification card. The well traveled card has buckled from age and features an inset portrait image of DiMaggio on the front with personal ID information on both front and back. The back also has a fingerprint of Joe DiMaggio along with a fine black ink signature c.1942. The wallet itself was obviously one of Joe's favorites, as it had been used to the degree that several joints have split at the sides. "JD" monogram is impressed on the front. Fine Marilyn Monroe original painting by Jon Whitcomb c.1958. We felt it appropriate to end the Marilyn Monroe portion of the auction with such an uplifting and beautiful piece of artwork. This original watercolor painting hung above the mantle in Joe DiMaggio's Beach St. San Francisco home for many years. The painting was executed by noted American illustrative artist Jon Whitcomb. By Whitcomb's own account in a 1980 interview, "Hearst needed an Easter hat feature and asked me to paint six ladies for it....I painted her on three other occasions mostly for Cosmopolitan. Her notions of magazine posing were quaint." The painting was based in large part on a series of Marilyn Monroe photographs taken by an unknown photographer in New York, one of which pictures her in a similar pose wearing the identical hat. The painting itself exhibits very fine detail with usage of light and shadow perfectly framing Marilyn's face beneath the cascading Easter hat. The medium is an artist's board which remains matted in a period whitewashed wooden frame. Painting size measures 12"x12" and is signed by Whitcomb at the bottom.
Whitcomb achieved national acclaim for his illustrative artwork beginning in the 1930s with works appearing in publications such as Collier's and Good Housekeeping. Although he was also an accomplished product illustrator for various advertisements incl. Cadillac, he is best known for his portrayal of beautiful women of the genre. After serving in World War II, Whitcomb resumed his craft and produced numerous notable pieces of actresses and pin up girls of the era. The offered painting of Marilyn Monroe was highly regarded by Joe DiMaggio as evidenced by its prominent placement within his home. Fine quality tweed sportcoat which Joe DiMaggio wore on the front cover of the October 1965 issue of GQ magazine. The sportcoat was one of Joe's favorites as he was often photographed at various events wearing the offered coat. Jacket exhibits moderate to heavy wear incl. a few minor areas of staining and some wear to the interior incl. a small tear at the top of the collar. The lot also includes a shield shaped Gentlemen's Quarterly plaque presented in October 1965 to DiMaggio "As a fashion personality in the city of San Francisco in recognition of the individuality in dress and his value influence on the apparel taste of his community".
