See a Picture of this Item 724 Significant 1941 Joe DiMaggio American League Most Valuable Player award. The importance of Joe DiMaggioÆs 1941 streak may be best illustrated by the fact that it often overshadows his win of the American League Most Valuable Player award in the same season. Joe DiMaggio began the 1941 season with a mild slump that ended on May 15, 1941. On this date, he began a streak for the ages, hitting safely in 56 consecutive games which would end on July 17th. While the streak is well known, it is less recognized that the Yankees began the streak 5 1/2 games out of first place; by the time the streak had ended, they were well out front in first. Joe DiMaggio was the essence of a Most Valuable Player. Along with lofty statistics he brought character, leadership, and guidance to his teammates. These factors would lead DiMaggio and the Yankees to another World Championship in 1941 after completing a season that is regarded by many baseball historians as one of the finest in baseball history. Joe DiMaggioÆs remarkable season was nearly topped by Ted Williams who batted an amazing .406 only to lose the MVP award by 37 votes. DiMaggioÆs 1941 statistics appear to be fictional at first glance: .357 batting average, 193 hits, 122 runs, 43 doubles, 30 home runs, 125 RBIÆs, .978 fielding average, and an amazing 13 strikeouts in 541 at bats. The offered 1941 American League MVP presentational pocket watch was given to DiMaggio by the Sporting News. Longines 18K gold pocket watch is of the highest quality featuring a finely engraved inscription on the reverse, ôPresented to Joseph Paul DiMaggio, Jr. Outfielder of the New York Yankees by The Sporting News For Being Named Most Valuable Player in American League for 1941 by the Baseball Writers of America.ö The watch remains in original condition (not running) inclusive of its Longines presentational box. Over the course of baseball history, there have been numerous seasons of incredible merit by individual players. Joe DiMaggioÆs 1941 season is, without question, among the most storied in the history of the game, with the offered MVP award ranking as the most significant player exemplar ever offered to the collecting public. Includes a photographic image of DiMaggio receiving the award from Art Flynn of The Sporting News at the start of the 1942 season: NM ($75,000.00-$100,000.00) $75,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 725 Significant 1939 Joe DiMaggio American League Most Valuable Player award. The 1939 season found Joe DiMaggio in his fourth full year with the New York Yankees. Joe had narrowly missed capturing the 1937 AL MVP honors to Charlie Gehringer by just four votes. DiMaggio would prove ready to claim the title in 1939, posting one of his finest seasons in the Major Leagues. The numbers were once again impressive with a .381 batting average (career high), 176 hits, 32 doubles, 30 home runs, 126 RBIÆs, and a .671 slugging percentage. All of these were in combination with a .978 fielding average. The 1939 season also marked the beginning and end of two periods in Yankee history. Lou Gehrig had removed himself from the lineup due to his tragic illness, and it was the young DiMaggio who stepped in to take his place among the Yankee elite. DiMaggio would take the 1939 Yankees to the World Championship batting .313 during the World Series against the Reds. Joe DiMaggioÆs Longines 18K gold pocketwatch is of the highest quality featuring a finely engraved inscription on the reverse, ôJoseph Paul DiMaggio Most Valuable Player of American League for 1939 Selected by Baseball WriterÆs AssÆn of America Presented by The Sporting News.ö The watch remains in its original Longines case and was presented to DiMaggio during the 1940 season by New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia at Yankee Stadium. Joe DiMaggio is one of only eight Major League players to have won three or more MVP awards with the offered example being the first of his career.
