See a Picture of this Item 620a Significant "The Wide Swing" Joe DiMaggio original painting by Harvey Dinnerstein. Few images in the history of sport are more recognizable than the graceful swing of Joe DiMaggio. Offered is the original oil on canvas painting of Joe DiMaggio as executed by noted artist Harvey Dinnerstein. Dinnerstein is highly regarded for his realism in portrayals of people in their natural surroundings. A student of Moses Sawyer (1944-46) his work is exhibited in numerous prestigious venues such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of American Art. The painting was originally commissioned by Sports Illustrated in 1974 as part of a "Living Legends" series of limited edition prints which were to be made from the original artwork and then subsequently autographed by the respective athletes (See Lot 81). The painting was inspired by the famed image taken in 1941 at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. picturing DiMaggio in his classic follow through during the 56 game hit streak. DiMaggio himself had given input on the execution of the painting, which captured the effortless power of his swing like no other artistic portrayal before or since. The colors remain vibrant, yet subtle, focusing the eye of the viewer on DiMaggio. After its use in the Sports Illustrated series, the painting was acquired by Philip Desind, renowned collector of 20th Century realism art. With notable foresight, Desind seized the opportunity to acquire the offered painting directly from the artist in 1974, recognizing the importance of the original art itself as well as the autographed prints for which it was created. Since its acquisition, "The Wide Swing" has quite possibly become one of the most viewed pieces of baseball artwork, seen by millions of people both nationally and internationally, through exposure at numerous art exhibitions, publication mediums, and museum displays. The painting served as the cover art for several prominent publications including Summer of '49 by David Halberstam, Encyclopedia of Major League Baseball: American League Team Histories, and Diamonds are Forever: Artists and Writers on Baseball exhibition catalogue. The Paramount Pictures film Wonder Boys starring Michael Douglas and Toby Maguire, also featured the painting as a background prop. Philip Desind passed away in 1996 at the age of 86. The painting is being offered as part of this historic auction of Joe DiMaggio materials by the daughter of Mr. Desind. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. See a Picture of this Item 649 Significant 1951 Joe DiMaggio New York Yankees final game worn home uniform attributed to the 1951 World Series. The 1951 season had been one of the more tumultuous of Joe DiMaggioÆs career. Joe was hampered by nagging injuries, pressured by the media and fans to perform, and virtually coaxed into retirement by his manager Casey Stengel. Through it all, DiMaggio would endure to lead the Yankees to yet another American League pennant and World Championship. Appearing in what would prove to be his final World Series in 1951, Joe struggled for the first three games, failing to collect a single hit. In typical DiMaggio fashion, he turned it around for the final three games to lead the Yankees to the title with three hits, two doubles, five RBIÆs, and what would prove to be the final home run of his career. Upon announcing his retirement, Joe stated the following, in part, ôàI feel that I have reached the stage where I can no longer produce for my ball club, my manager, my teammates, and my fans the sort of baseball their loyalty to me deserves.ö Offered is Joe DiMaggioÆs 1951 New York Yankees home uniform worn in the 1951 World Series. Jersey is constructed of pinstriped flannel with original ôNYö logo on the front and #5 on the reverse. A.G. Spalding & Bros. Tagging (1949-52 style is identical to the tagging found in the 1951 regular season home jersey that DiMaggio presented to the Hall of Fame in 1952) remains affixed inside the collar along with ô44ö size tag. ôJ.DiMaggio 1951ö chain stitched onto its original strip tag is also affixed within the collar. The name tag has some damage with a period repair mostly to the ôDiö in DiMaggio and ô1951ö date numbers. ôDry Clean Onlyö tag is stitched inside the tail front. The jersey exhibits evident usage including light general wear and three period repairs to small tears on the back. The pants are also made of pinstriped flannel with ôJ DiMaggio 51ö chain stitched onto a strip tag inside the waistband. A.G. Spalding & Bros. tagging (1949-52 style) remains inside the waist along with ôDry Clean Onlyö and ô38ö size tags. The pants also exhibit evident use incl. light areas of toning and a period repaired tear to the top of the back pocket. It has also been confirmed, via period photographic comparison, that DiMaggio wore the jersey during the 1951 World Series. Included with the lot is an original large format 11öx14ö photograph from the DiMaggio collection picturing Joe hitting a double while wearing the offered jersey. This was DiMaggioÆs final Major League at bat on October 10, 1951 in the eighth inning of Game #6 of the World Series. The link to the 1951 World Series is further evidenced by the fact that the 1951 Yankees regular season home jerseys had the 1951 American League Golden Anniversary patch on the left sleeve as seen on the example that DiMaggio himself presented to the Hall of Fame in 1952. The pants appear to be identical to a pair worn by Joe early in the 1951 season. Included in the lot are (2) vintage images from the DiMaggio collection picturing Joe shaking hands with General Douglas MacArthur while wearing the offered pants. While it is clear that the jersey was worn in World Series play, we cannot ascertain whether the pants were only worn during the regular season or during both the regular and postseason. That Joe would have kept such a significant jersey is evidenced by the incredible quantity of important materials he collected during his career and by period written accounts quoting DiMaggio stating as such. Based on provenance, condition, and the significance of being the final New York Yankees Major League jersey ever worn by Joe DiMaggio, the offered uniform is without question the finest to become available to the collecting public. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions, Inc., LOA from MEARS Authentication/David Bushing & David Grob, and several period photographs from the DiMaggio collection (as referenced above): EX (Estimate Upon Request) $170,000.00

Additionally, and quite possibly most importantly, he provided Americans with a positive influence during a bleak period in U.S. history. His hard work on the field was revered by all, while his virtue and professionalism off the field was similarly respected. On January 10, 1977, President Gerald Ford presented Joe DiMaggio with the highest American civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom With Distinction. During the visit, DiMaggio acquired the signatures of both world leaders on the sweet spot of an official Bobby Brown American League ball. Penned neatly in black ink, each signature remains very dark and bold rating 9/10 out of 10.
