Signature appears to have been partially enhanced as there are areas where a blue ink is visible under the black fountain pen. If enhanced it was done some time ago as both inks are underneath the clear coating. The ball originated from the collection of former Major League player and manager Jack Onslow. Onslow had the ball signed by Ruth for him and includes a detailed letter of provenance from the Onslow family. Signature rates 8 out of 10. Ball itself remains very clean with only a minor blemish on the bottom panel. The ball was obtained during Game #2 of the 1939 World Series in New York at which a young boy named Walter C. Hultman asked Ruth for his autograph. Ruth gladly obliged asking, "How's that kid?". The ball has remained in the family since its signing and is being offered for the first time publicly. Lot includes original ball box, 1939 World Series program cover, (1) 1939 World Series Game #1 ticket stub at which the boy's father noticed Ruth and started the process by which the ball was obtained, and (2) 1939 World Series Game #2 ticket stubs from the game at which the ball was signed. See a Picture of this Item 753 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig auto. baseball c.1927-31. Very lightly toned off white Barnard AL ball signed by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in uncommon purple ink. Ruth signature resides on the sweet rating 8 out of 10 and Gehrig is positioned on the adjacent side panel rating 8/9 out of 10. The ball was consigned by the daughter of the original recipient who carefully preserved the baseball within its original box (included) allowing the signatures to remain in such fine condition. The ball was obtained directly from Lou Gehrig while he and Joe Grabiner (relative of White Sox secretary Harry Grabiner) were visiting the family farm in Dumont Lake, MI. Ruth and Gehrig signed baseballs of quality that have not been previously offered are increasingly rare with the offered example among the finest that we have handled.
