See a Picture of this Item 966a Exceptional Ty Cobb professional model baseball bat c.1922-25. Offered is a Louisville Slugger 125 model bat measuring 34 1/2" long and weighing 36 ounces with bold centerbrand and signature stampings. Bat retains its' original patina and surface including evidence of ball marks and original period handle tape that remains untouched and toned from quantity of game usage wear. Barrel of bat has a few period finish nails to repair slight areas of deadwood on both front and back. This wonderful example of Cobb weaponry has never been offered publicly and originates from the personal collection of a twenty year Major League veteran. Furthermore, the provenance of the bat is corroborated by an interview that the player gave to author Donald Honig for the 1977 book "The Man in the Dugout" stating in part, "I don't think there's too much difference in the game as it was played when I broke in and the way it's played today. Of course, they livened the ball and shortened the fences, and hitters started going for distance more then they used to. You see, the bat changed. I don't know whether you ever thought of that. The structure of the bat changed. I've got one that Ty Cobb gave me years ago, and you can see the difference. Those bats didn't have big ends on them; the weight was more evenly distributed, with bigger handles and smaller barrels than what you've got today." While there are without question numerous bats of quality that are both satisfying and a privilege to own when it comes to the art of hitting it must begin and end with Cobb. He reached the pinnacle of baseball batsmanship early and often in his career pounding out lifetime totals of 3,034 games, .367 batting average, 11,429 at bats, 4,191 hits, 724 doubles, 297 triples, 2,245 runs scored, and 892 stolen bases for good measure. Based on the quality of the bat, original condition, usage characteristics, vintage, and direct source provenance it is appropriate to rank the offered exemplar among the finest extant.
