This batch of papers includes the following handwritten words "received more bravery of mind buy the action of achilles than by hearing the definitions of fortitudeö and ôHow come you could win when the I. are known to be quitters look at their history. Both Rocky Marciano and his brother, Pete, were baseball players. Rocky had played on the regionally-famed Taunton Lumber semi-pro team and had tried out for the Chicago Cubs. Although he was described as a "great hitter", his throwing skills were poor and he was not signed by the club. Ironically, it was that same arm that couldn't throw a baseball that certainly could throw the most powerful punches! Both as Rocky's brother and as an accomplished individual in his own right, Peter Marciano was very much part of the sporting community. This jersey - and the two baseball jerseys that follow in this auction - reflect his friendship with legendary ball players. ($1,000.00-$2,000.00) $200.00

See a Picture of this Item 310 The African American Sport Tributary: A School Marm's Dream, consists of more than 1,800 sports related items from the collection of Elizabeth Meaders. It has been assembled to document the glorious story of African American Sports participation. That participation is a poignant and inspiring story that has never previously been told through the medium of sports memorabilia. When Ms. Meaders, a school teacher, created her collection, she started right off by making the bold statement that, "American Sports history itself starts with an African American sports hero!" She then proceeds to tell the story of a slave whose pugilistic feats caught the eye of a sports loving British nobleman who purchased this slave, named Bill Richmond, and then took him to England where his abilities thrilled the boxing public. Further down the sports history timeline, our new Nation embraced the spectator sport of horse racing, which was dramatically dominated by African American jockeys until racism closed the door to their participation. Another little known gem of sports history is that in the year 1902, the richest sports personality in the world was an African American named Major Taylor. He was the fastest bicycle-riding man in the world, the sport of choice in the year 1902. Various items in the Meaders Collection document these stories and highlight other little-known African American sports tidbits. The remarkable story of the Harlem Renaissance basketball team is important because they were the seed from which all subsequent Black basketball teams modeled themselves. Thus creating a new brand of fast-paced, entertainment-laden basketball with winning results. Their style of play was exported to Europe through the Harlem Globetrotters and other Harlem-named basketball ambassadors where an eager sports marketplace embraced them in an arena devoid of racism based on color. The African American Sports Tributary: A School Marm's Dream, consists of letters, documents, awards, equipment, original art, commemoratives and photos, many of which are historically significant. The collection is unique in many ways. In a hobby dominated by male participants, the Meader's Collection might well be the first large serious sports collection ever conceived and assembled by a female. Auction records seem to suggest that no African American sports collection covering the full range of diversified American Sports relics has ever been previously offered at auction. In order to keep this "wisp of a dream" collection intact, the entire collection is being offered as an unprecedented single auction lot. Serendipity aside, what we have in this quite special sport collection is a story of doors closed and doors opened. "Closed doors" is the sad story of the Negro Leagues and other missed opportunities for glory on the world sports stage. "Opened doors" is the story of today's African American athletes who have welcomed the opportunity to compete in sports, especially since sports "rule" our nation's interest. These African American athletes have broadened the playing standards, quickened the game pace, and added drama to the sports scene while playing with their whole heart. They have effectively given a gift to American sports by providing something that was previously profoundly missing: the ingredient known as soul. (Estimate On Request) DNS

See a Picture of this Item 358 Important Jim Thorpe football jersey c.1911-12. There are few names that garner the level of respect in the history of organized athletics then that of Jim Thorpe. Born to Native American parents Thorpe impressed his coach (Pop Warner) at the Carlisle Indian school in 1907 by excelling in both track and football. After a brief two year hiatus Thorpe returned to Carlisle in 1911 and 1912 to become an All-American in both seasons. At the Olympic Games of 1912 Thorpe won the title as the World' Greatest Athlete winning both the pentathalon and decathalon and if that was not enough he then went on to play professional baseball for six seasons while organizing a pro football team from Canton, Ohio. In 1950 he was selected as the Athlete of the first half of the 20th century and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963. The offered jersey is of a dark brown wool knit retaining its' original Spalding tag inside front tail. Jersey front features large white "C" and on the sleeves are three rings of white surrounding red. See a Picture of this Item 394 1961 New York Yankees World Champions team auto. baseball. To date, the aura of the legendary home run race between Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris has been at best only equalled by the 1998 McGwire and Sosa home run contest. Battling hostility of many fans and the press, Maris achieved what was thought to be impossible 61 home runs to break Babe Ruth's hallowed record of 60 in the storied 1927 season. Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick had ruled in July that any record set after 154 games had been played would carry an asterisk in the record books, which was only removed, leaving Maris in sole possession of the season home run record, after Maris' tragic death in 1985. His record would stand until 1998, when Mark McGwire hit 70. Since Mantle hit 54, the duo still holds the two-man season record with 115, eclipsing the mark of 107 set by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1927. As for the team, the Yankees, also paced by Whitey Ford's 25-4 record, compiled an amazing 109 regular season wins and then overpowered the Cincinnati Reds 4 games to 1 to win the 1961 World Series. The offered item is a Cronin Official American League ball with (25) strong (8-10 out of 10) blue ballpoint signatures including Mantle, Maris (MVP), Ford (Cy Young Award), Berra, Howard, Terry, Kubek, Skowron, Houk, Arroyo, and Boyer. It is particularly noteworthy that the Mantle and Maris signatures are genuine-not the clubhouse versions almost always seen on 1961 Yankees team balls. Includes LOA from PSA/DNA J.Spence-S.Grad: EX/MT-NM ($10,000.00-$15,000.00) DNS
