See a Picture of this Item 847 Scarce Brooklyn Dodgers professional model baseball hat with interior protective head plates c.1947-50. Classic original royal blue Brooklyn Dodgers hat with embroidered white "B" on front showing fine evident use overall. Interior retains its original white leather headband with Spalding label. Noted on the inside of the body of the hat are two composite shell plates which were sewn into the hat by the Dodgers as a result of the racially motivated beanings that were occurring to Jackie Robinson. There are only a scant few known examples of this type customized hat, one of which originated from the personal collection of Jackie Robinson and is identical in almost every respect to the offered example. This particular hat was originally obtained by a Manhassett, New York gentleman who lived in the same neighborhood as a Brooklyn Dodgers employee. The two became acquainted and led to the presentation of the offered Dodgers hat to the gentleman. At the time of presentation, it was relayed to the gentleman that this was a "hat worn by Jackie Robinson with the protective plates due to him being hit in the head by opposing pitchers." The hat has "B.Hess" written inside the leather headband corresponding to the recipient with no other indicative player markings. It is important to note that the offered hat is approx. a size 6 3/4 versus the documented Robinson family example which was around size 7. There has been at least one other Dodgers hat of that period with protective plates that has turned up with definitive attribution to a player other than Robinson. Player attribution aside the rarity and significance of this particular hat provides a poignant insight into the racial tension within the game during the late 1940s period in which Robinson altered the sporting landscape for the betterment of all. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and letter of provenance from the family of the original recipient: VG-EX ($5,000-$10,000) $11,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 892 Important July 4, 1960 Mickey Mantle 300th Home Run attributed baseball (hit at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C.). Well toned baseball showing obvious signs of use/wear has a large vintage "300" ink notation written across a side panel. A band of surface loss encircles the ball (partially effecting the notation) and appears to be the result of tape which was in place for many years and then removed. It was long displayed with other prominent Mantle artifacts in the Little League Museum of Baxter Springs, KS; famed for being home town to the team on which a young Mickey was playing when discovered. The ball can be seen within the Museum display in a pair of included color photographs which also show several other milestone balls from Mantle's career. These other balls have what appear to be similar strips/areas of surface loss and toning. This is an important trait which suggests a similar pattern employed by Mantle when identifying milestone baseballs from throughout his career. Following a well known late 1990 de-accessioning of several pieces from the Museum collection a few of these baseballs have surfaced, including Mantle's first home run which sold at auction in December of 2004 (Sotheby's; $189,750). One of the better documented Mantle home run balls to have entered the marketplace. Includes framed display (19"x18") which houses the aforementioned images and a reproduced box score/article from the game: VG-EX ($20,000-$40,000) $15,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 893 Mickey Mantle professional model baseball bat c.1965-68 (PSA/DNA "GU 7.5"). Louisville Slugger 125 model bat with Mantle facsimile signature impressed in the barrel measures 35" long and weighs 33.2oz. Model number "M110" has been factory stamped in the knob. Outstanding useage wear is evident throughout with ball and stitch marks covering the barrel and some scattered blue bat rack marks. A nice coat of pine tar remains on the handle, a highly desirable and well documented trait in a Mantle game bat. Mild grain swelling, due to repeated contact, is present on the reverse barrel which has also a small crack/separation and there is a larger crack in the upper handle (not visible when the bat is positioned for display). Through research of factory ordering records, PSA has concluded that this bat was likely shipped to Mantle in 1965, specifically. In the twilight of his storied career Mantle had lead the Yankees through an unprecedented string of (12) American League Championship seasons including (7) in which they earned World Series titles. Includes LOAs from PSA/DNA and Hunt Auctions: EX ($20,000-$30,000) $18,000.00

Classic New York Yankees navy blue wool hat with embroidered "NY" on front. Interior of the hat retains original white headband with "New Era" manufacturer's tagging and 7 3/8 size flag tag. Evident use is visible throughout including perspiration toning to the white headband, cracking to interior bill support from wear, and general appropriate surface wear. One portion of an exterior seam on the second pleats has begun to separate near the base of the hat. "Mick 7" written in period black marker under the bill along with hand signed inscription from Mantle, "To Tom My Best Wishes, Your Friend Mickey Mantle". The inscription was written to Mantle's teammate and close friend Tom Tresh who had received the offered hat directly from Mantle. An accompanying hand written and signed letter from Tresh corroborates the fact that Mantle did in fact give him the offered hat in 1968. Mickey Mantle game worn uniform pieces are among the most desired of any player with hats rating as the most difficult to acquire given the typical lack of provenance. The offered example clearly rates among the finest Mantle hats to have ever been offered at auction with original condition and superb direct provenance.
