The offered box ranks as the most treasured of any player endorsed cigar boxes and is one of only three known exemplars. Wooden lidded box has ±Honus Wagnere burned into top of lid surrounded by fan and star decor, front and side exterior panels repeat the impressed Wagner name as on the lid top. Interior reveals a paper lid label picturing a young Wagner on the Louisville Colonels c.1897-1899. Printed advertisement for the Honus Wagner ±Supreme Cigare above image and on interior band. Image derives from the 1897-99 Henry Reccius trade card that was originally discovered in Louisville to which the mate resides in the collection of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Box has some general wear to exterior incl. losses to tax stampings and paper border along with soiling with lid detached from box. Interior label is fairly clean with only some typical age toning, few surface creases, several small paper chips. Interesting group of pieces has descended within the Shibe Family whom are well known for their long standing ownership in the Philadelphia Athletics and partnership in Reach Sporting Goods. Includes an important early baseball stitching vise (done in cast iron) believed to have been used in the A.J. Reach and Co. factory in which Ben Shibe was a partner. By the late 1800s the firm was producing over 1,000,000 baseballs per year; set of drafting tools in case and a pair of awls, razor, and folding ruler; vintage spools of red and white thread; Monte Cross Testimonial Dinner marked souvenir mini-ball and a mini Reach B.Johnson OAL ball; 1929 and 1930 World Series programs (cover off 1929 and showing heavy chipping/wear); 1929 A-s A.L. Champions publication; (4) 1936-47 A-s scorecards and (1) 1949 Phillies (plus a number of Phillies/A-s related ticket stubs; 1952 Shibe Park press pass; 1944 FDR appearance at Shibe Park ticket; and others (some pieces being more modern). See a Picture of this Item 98 Exceptional folk art painted baseball bat c.1880-1900. Oversized soft wood hand turned baseball bat measuring an amazing 44" long having been extensively decorated with painted decor of baseball relation. Central design of crossed bats with baseballs flanking a pair of high top black baseball socks having "Leigh" above. The body of the bat displays several different painted vignette images including game scene, batting scenes, fielding scene, and pitching scene. Additional high top black socks are found towards the handle of the bat in addition to several areas of colorfully painted geometrical symbols dispersed throughout the entire bat. The geometrical decor is similar in nature to various Masonic decorative techniques of a similar time period. Condition grade is superb, retaining its original unrestored surface with only small areas of minor paint flaking and one area with a few 1" to 2" surface scratches. Cast iron eyelet remains on top of the barrel end which indicates this may have been created as a presentational display piece of some sort or perhaps a trade sign. The offered bat originated from a home in Montana whose inhabitants were originally of an East Coast familial origin. One of the better examples of baseball related folk art that we have handled in our 25 year company history: EX ($7,500-$15,000) $13,750.00
